Break Unhealthy Habits

Break Unhealthy Habits

Breaking bad habits is difficult. However, if you begin by setting a goal to end your behavior, you are one small step closer to changing your life for the better. It is definitely worth putting in the time and effort it takes to end the behavior and its negative side effects.  Many bad habits are also unhealthy; therefore the benefits do outweigh the work ahead.

We all probably have more than one bad habit, however decide on the one that will benefit you most to break.  Is there something unhealthy you are doing that could have long term affects on your body?  Is there a habit that is keeping you from fully enjoying your life?  Set a goal for one habit, and focus your energy on achieving that goal.

Where Do I Begin?

First you must acknowledge that you have a habit, and that it is a problem.  Until you personally acknowledge that fact, you will not be able to make the changes necessary to alter your behavior.  Next you must decide on the action you will take to change what you are doing, and actually act.

Since behavior change is a progression, and not immediate, think in terms of going from one step to the next.  EasyGoals.com can help you with supportive reminders, and tools to track your progress as you advance through each stage.  There may be points where you find you’ve taken a step back.  Your human after all; find a way to get back on track.

WebMD and the Mayo Clinic online both have great tools to help deal with smoking cessation, and emotional eating issues. It is also important to recognize when an addiction requires professional help, so consulting your doctor for advice is also important.

Break a Bad Habit, Begin a Good Habit

Once you’ve acknowledged your bad habit and are ready to change, put a plan in place that works for you. Another idea is to start something brand new, along with the thing you are working to end. Maybe beginning a running program could help motivate you to quit smoking.  Signing up for a yoga class may help you get active as well as help ease stress.

Getting healthy and staying that way often means waging a battle against our natures, our physical and social environments, and a lifetime of bad habits.  But if you are ready for change and have developed a plan, you will be able to make the right decisions. Remember that EasyGoals.com has great tools to help you not only define your goals, but also supports you along the way to your ultimate achievement.

What Motivates You?

What Motivates You?

Now is always a good time to look at your life, at what you have done and what you would like to do in the future.  Just thinking about these things, however, does not necessarily lead to achieving them. You must have a plan to meet your goals.  Even more important, you must have clear reasons why you want to achieve your goals.

Motivation is Key

Determining the motivation behind why you want to achieve a goal, is as important as the goal itself.  If you do not have a driving desire why you want to reach the finish line, then it will be much harder to get there.  So, what motivates you?  What makes you get out of bed every day, and show up to do whatever it is you do (even if you do not love it right now)? What spurs you on toward making changes in your life?

Your Driving Force

A Wikipedia article entitled Motivation defines it like this: “Motivation is the driving force which causes us to achieve goals. Motivation is said to be intrinsic or extrinsic.” Intrinsic motivation is powered by internal desires.  Something we want that is purely from within, and is not influenced by any outside forces.  Extrinsic motivation comes from external influences such as a lack of finances, a family issue, or competition.

So what are the things that motivate you personally?  An easy way to clarify the motivation for each goal is to ask why you want to achieve each one. For example, if you are looking to start a new career, a motivation might be to earn more money (extrinsic motivation), or might be to do what you love, instead of a job that just earns money (intrinsic motivation).  Finding your motivation is imperative to goal achievement.  By taking time to clarify the motivation behind each goal, you will find a clearer road to gaining what you desire.

Time to Visit the Doctor

Most of us do our best to avoid the required physical our doctors ask us to get.  Seeing the doctor under any circumstances is akin to paying taxes; no one likes to do it, but it is necessary.  You may be working to become better at maintaining your health, routine doctor visits is one way to make sure your body stays in the best shape possible.

The routine physical is so important for several reasons.  First, it is a time to check in with your doctor, and inform him or her of anything new or different going on with your body.  These personal observations can be critical for your doctor to catch many conditions early on.

A routine physical could mean the difference between a serious condition being detected, treated and taken care of, or that condition going undetected for years.  The act of seeing your doctor regularly can truly make a difference between life or death.  Especially as we age, we need to be diligent in the care of our bodies.  Below is a list from WebMD, listing the most important tests doctors recommend be a part of your regular physical.

  • Cholesterol Test
  • Blood Pressure  Measurement
  • Colorectal Cancer Screening
  • Pap Smear (women)
  • Mammogram (women)

Possibility

Possibility

The possible’s slow fuse is lit by the imagination.  ~Emily Dickenson

All human life begins as a few microscopic cells. Without the right combination and timing, these cells are useless and routinely die, however full of potential life they might be.  Possibility exists inside each of us.

Think back on something you have done, something you have accomplished that at one time seemed absolutely impossible.  Recalling the past, you might remember how far away that goal seemed at one time.  If you think about it now, though, you feel the accomplishment very tangibly.

We are capable of incredible things.  We are truly only limited by our fears of failing.  If we choose to let our imaginations lead us, anything is absolutely possible.  The potential to succeed and have an excellent life exists in each of us.

You must believe that you have unlimited possibilities for what you can achieve and be.  Only then will you discover the amazing life you have the possibility to live.  Choose to embrace possibility, and you will achieve great things.

Take Action

Take Action

You have written your goals down, created you master list, and you are ready to begin achieving. Now is the time to act on those goals.  We can spend too much time planning and imagining; the time comes when you just have to get started.  Taking action puts you, literally, on the path to achievement.  Your planning and imagining are important, but acting on your goal is the only sure way to see it become reality.

The hardest part can be figuring out where to start.  A great place to begin is to break down the goal, and decide on the first 5 steps you can take.  With this list you can decide when you will work on each step, and how you will see that step completed. You could make a schedule for the week, and decide how you can check off this first list of 5 steps.

Another way to help you take action, is to use a visualization session.  Take a moment and focus on what it will feel like to have achieved your goal.  Imagine yourself working in the job you desire to be in; see the work you will be doing, imagine the conversations you will have.  Visualize the environment around you.

Participate in making yourself feel the good feelings you will experience once you have achieved your goal.  This visualization will arouse your desire to act.  At this point decide on the first small thing you can do that will get you one step closer to your goal, and take 30 minutes to do that first thing.

Taking action as soon as you can is greatly contagious.  Continuous action will create momentum, and you will have a strong desire to keep taking action. Make a commitment to take action immediately, today.  You could begin by going through the interactive goal setting seminar at EasyGoals.com.

Belief

Belief

What you think of yourself directly influences the outcome of what you are trying to achieve.   You must believe in yourself, and your abilities. How much you like yourself contributes directly to your ability to succeed. Self esteem and self confidence are inseparable.

The stronger your self-esteem, the less an encounter with failure will set you back. Failure is an event; treat each event as a learning opportunity. We often place erroneous limitations on ourselves that only exist in our minds.  We must break through the negativity we have created mentally, to focus on the positive we can possess if we so choose.

Fear is often a part of our constructed limitations. We fear the unknown, for it could present a danger to us.  We fear change, because we do not know what lies ahead. However without change nothing can get better. We fear failure and rejection, and we even fear success. Speaker Denis Waitley states that “all fear is false evidence appearing real.”  Ignorance leads us to fear the unknown, prejudice keeps us from forgetting what has happened in the past, and premonition adds to fear that the bad will happen again.

It is your knowledge, skills, training and experience that help you not only survive, but  thrive in life. You must first believe in yourself—you must believe.  Remember that you become what you think about most of the time.  If you focus on confidence in your abilities, what you can do, and also your achievement and success, that is the reality you will experience.

Try EasyGoals today, and take the first step to success by setting  goals for your life.
